History of Longewala War Memorial
The Battle of Longewala was one of the major battles fought on the western at the time of the India Pakistan War of 1971. On the night of 04th or 05th December 1971, Pakistan forces consisting of 4000 soldiers, Sherman Tanks, T-59, and a medium artillery battery attacked the Longewala border post held by 23 Punjab. Indian soldiers gallantly held the post and show the need for support of IAF. On the morning of 5th Dec 1971, the Hunter aircraft that based at Jaisalmer wreaked havoc on the Pakistani troops with their devastating firepower. The Hunters of 122 Squadron flew 18 sorties and destroyed 100 vehicles, 36 enemy tanks, and killed 200 Pakistan soldiers.

Entry to the Longewala War Memorial is completely free of cost. The memorial is open every day of the week from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm. If you wish to watch the war film, there is a Rs. 40 fee.
